Description
Inga Johnson's “diary” might be better classified as an autograph book or a collaborative memoir. In a small ledger of 100 unlined pages, Johnson curated several poems and illustrations that appear to have been produced by soldiers, nurses, and war workers with whom she was in regular contact. Each drawing is done in a distinctive style and is accompanied by the artist’s signature, complete with information indicating military rank, role, and battalion. Certain pages are reserved entirely for Johnson’s comrades to sign, reminiscent of a school yearbook. Johnson evidently kept the ledger as an invaluable memento, as the final item pasted to the diary’s back cover is a memorial card dated 26 July 1936 that features the poems “Requiescant” and “Cease Fire” by Canadian poet Frederick George Scott.
