William Andrew White Diary 1918
Description
Diary kept by William Andrew White from 1 January 1918 to 26 December 1918. The diary details White’s experiences while serving as a Captain and Chaplain with the No. 2 Construction Battalion, an all-black Canadian unit, during World War I. Entries describe White’s movements in and around Lajoux, France, near the French-Swiss border, and offer details about letters received and sent; mass services; meals with friends; and incidents occurring among soldiers and other members of the Battalion. Included with the diary is a loose sheet of paper with YMCA Canada letterhead, on which White lists what he understands to be his duties as Chaplain, demonstrating how dedicated he was to his role.
