1916 Diary of Ella Rogers

Having neglected to order a diary from Eaton’s department store, as Ella Rogers explains in her first entry (4 March 1916), she used paper from her sister Bessie’s business college ledger. This explains the oversized format of the third volume of her war diary, measuring 33.5 x 20 centimetres, and the vertical lines running down the pages. Rogers recorded home-front activities including her recitals of patriotic poems at fundraisers and knitting khaki-coloured socks for soldiers. These home-front accounts are interspersed with accounts of school picnics and teas, tennis playing and skating.
